DISEASE PRECAUTION

Growers should balance hybrid yield potential, hybrid maturity and cultural practice selection against their anticipated risk of a specific disease and need for resistance. In high disease risk conditions, consider planting hybrids with at least moderate resistance ratings of 4 or higher to help reduce risk. When susceptible hybrids with disease ratings of 1 to 3 are planted in conditions of high disease pressure, the grower assumes a higher level of risk. If conditions are severe, even hybrids rated as resistant can be adversely affected. Independent of yield reduction, disease can predispose plants to secondary diseases such as stalk rots. This requires individual field and hybrid monitoring for stalk stability and timely harvest when warranted.

HEAT RESPONSE

1 = Delays, least responsive; 9 = Responsive, usually heads under stress. Grain sorghum hybrids react differently to environmental conditions. The characteristics used to describe this environmental reaction are "heat response" and "color score." Either trait is desirable in grain sorghum hybrids. Yearly environment will dictate which characteristic benefits production. NOTE: Heat response and color scores express characteristics that could be favorable or unfavorable, depending on environmental conditions. Characteristics should be compared to hybrids of similar maturity group only.

 

COLORING

1 = Delays maturity; 9 = Very responsive, matures under cool conditions. Grain coloring in sorghum hybrids is closely associated with physiological maturity. Hybrids which are "early to color" are more responsive to cool temperatures than other sorghum hybrids. Under cool conditions from weather or late planting, these hybrids tend to mature and dry down rather than delay maturity. Grain sorghum hybrids react differently to environmental conditions. The characteristics used to describe this environmental reaction are "heat response" and "color score." Either trait is desirable in grain sorghum hybrids.
